La Nucia – The city of sport and nature 2026

Complete guide to La Nucia on the northern Costa Blanca: sports facilities, property prices, nature and why Scandinavians love this mountain town near Benidorm.

14 min readSpanienfastigheter

La Nucia is the town on the Costa Blanca where you can run on an Olympic athletics track in the morning, hike in the Sierra Aitana mountains in the afternoon and sit on a terrace with views over the Mediterranean in the evening — all without moving more than ten minutes from home. The town lies 8 kilometres north of Benidorm and 10 kilometres inland from Altea's coast, on a hillside facing the mountains with sea views. The population has grown from 5,000 to over 20,000 residents in two decades, and 63 nationalities are registered in the municipality.

Property prices average around €2,200 per square metre — 20 to 35 percent lower than the coastal areas of Altea and Benidorm. For that you get a larger plot, lower density and a municipality that has invested hundreds of millions in sports facilities, schools and infrastructure. La Nucia's Ciudad Deportiva Camilo Cano, with 66 facilities spread across 400,000 square metres, is one of Spain's most impressive sports complexes.

This guide gives you everything you need to know as a Swedish buyer: prices by area, sports facilities, nature, climate, comparison with the neighbouring towns and an honest picture of advantages and disadvantages.

Where is La Nucia?

La Nucia is located in the comarca of Marina Baixa in Alicante province, on the northern Costa Blanca. The town sits on a south-facing hillside approximately 200 metres above sea level, with Puig Campana (1,406 m) and Sierra Aitana (1,557 m) as a dramatic backdrop.

Distances from La Nucia:

  • Altea and Albir beaches: 8–10 km (10–12 minutes by car)
  • Benidorm town centre: 8 km (12–15 minutes)

  • Alicante city: 55 km (45 minutes)
  • Valencia: 140 km (1 hour 30 minutes)
  • Fonts del Algar (waterfalls): 7 km (10 minutes)

Proximity to Benidorm provides access to all major city services — hospital, shopping centres, nightlife — while La Nucia's own location offers peace, space and mountain views. This combination is what attracts buyers.

Why is La Nucia called "the city of sport"?

La Nucia's greatest attraction is the Ciudad Deportiva Camilo Cano — a sports complex unmatched among municipalities of La Nucia's size. The facility spreads across 400,000 square metres and contains 66 separate sports installations.

What is in the Ciudad Deportiva?

  • Estadio Olímpico Camilo Cano: Certified athletics track with football pitch in the centre — used for national championship events
  • Football: Several pitches for 11-a-side, 7-a-side, beach soccer and futsal
  • Tennis: Ferrer Tennis Academy with 10+ courts — founded by former ATP player David Ferrer
  • Swimming: Outdoor pool and heated indoor pool (25 metres)
  • Athletics: Certified running track for training camps and competitions
  • Climbing: Outdoor climbing wall
  • BMX and skatepark: Official BMX track and modern skatepark facility
  • Parkour park: One of the few official parkour facilities in Spain
  • Basketball, volleyball, squash, padel: Multiple courts for each sport

National athletics championships, Supersprint Duathlon championships and international football matches are held here regularly. Professional sports teams from across Europe use La Nucia as a training camp during winter thanks to the mild climate.

Tips

If you are interested in sport and are looking for property on the Costa Blanca, La Nucia is hard to beat. For the price of a one-bedroom apartment in Altea you can get a villa with a pool — and access to sports facilities that are normally only found in major cities.

What does it cost to use the sports facilities?

La Nucia municipality subsidises a large part of the operating costs. Registered residents (empadronados) pay heavily reduced fees. An annual membership for the gym and swimming pool costs around €200–300 per year — a fraction of what a private club costs in Benidorm or Altea.

What is the climate like in La Nucia?

La Nucia has a dry Mediterranean climate with an exceptional number of sunshine hours — an estimated 3,000 hours of sunshine per year, or an average of 8 hours per day.

Temperatures throughout the year:

  • Winter (December–February): 7–16°C. Clear days with cool air. The mountains provide some wind protection, but evenings can feel cold. You need heating indoors.
  • Spring (March–May): 11–23°C. Perfect temperature for hiking and outdoor activities. Almond and orange trees are in blossom.
  • Summer (June–August): 20–32°C. Warm but drier than the coast — La Nucia's elevation gives a few degrees cooler than Benidorm on the hottest days.
  • Autumn (September–November): 13–27°C. Many consider this the best period — comfortable temperatures and a calmer atmosphere.

Rainfall: Approximately 420 mm per year, concentrated in autumn (October is the rainiest month with an average of 54 mm). Summer is almost completely dry with under 5 mm in July.

Obs!

The DANA phenomenon with heavy downpours can occur in autumn, particularly in October–November. La Nucia's elevation protects against flooding, but always check drainage and elevation conditions when buying a property. Avoid ground-floor units in low-lying spots.

Who lives in La Nucia?

La Nucia is a genuinely multilingual and multinational community. Of the town's over 20,000 residents, approximately 40 percent are foreign nationals — representing 63 different nationalities.

The largest foreign groups are:

  • British: Historically the largest foreign group, many are retirees
  • Germans and Dutch: Well-established communities with their own associations
  • Norwegians and Scandinavians: La Nucia shares community infrastructure with the neighbouring municipality of Alfaz del Pi, which has one of Europe's largest Norwegian colonies. Den Norske Skole Costa Blanca was founded in Alfaz del Pi in 1972, and Norwegian institutions (church, associations, healthcare) are within a 5-minute drive
  • Spanish: Approximately 60 percent of the population — La Nucia has retained a strong Spanish identity unlike purely expat enclaves

The atmosphere is a blend of Spanish everyday life and international community. You can shop at the Spanish market on Monday morning and attend a Norwegian church service on Sunday — all within the same municipality.

What is there for nature and hiking near La Nucia?

La Nucia's location at the foot of the mountains makes it one of the Costa Blanca's best bases for outdoor activities.

Sierra Aitana — the roof of Alicante

Sierra Aitana is the highest mountain range in Alicante province, with its peak at 1,557 metres above sea level. From here you have views over the entire coast — from Calpe to Benidorm — and on clear days you can see across to Ibiza. The most popular hiking trails start from Port de Tudons and Font de Partegat in Benifato (20 minutes from La Nucia). Allow two hours to reach the summit.

Puig Campana — the dramatic silhouette

Puig Campana (1,406 m) is the mountain you see every day from La Nucia — an imposing limestone peak with a characteristic "notch" at the top. The hike to the summit is demanding (4–5 hours return) but rewards with a 360-degree panorama over all of Marina Baixa.

Fonts del Algar

Waterfalls and natural swimming pools located just 7 kilometres from La Nucia near Callosa d'en Sarrià. An excellent destination for families — entrance costs around €5 for adults.

Local walking trails

AllTrails lists 6 scenic trails in the La Nucia area. A popular circular walk follows a small stream with shaded sections and ends with views over Benidorm, Calpe and the Sierra de Bernia. Thanks to the mild climate the hiking season is almost year-round — only July and August can be too hot for longer routes.

What else is there to do in La Nucia?

Sunday market (Rastro)

La Nucia's rastro is one of the Valencia region's largest flea markets with over 400 stalls every Sunday from 08:00 to 14:00. Here you find antiques, second-hand goods, vinyl records, books, vintage clothing, fruit and vegetables. The market is held at the industrial area L'Alberca near the CV-70 road.

On Mondays there is a general market at the Plaça Auditori near the town hall with fresh produce and local products.

Old town (Casco Antiguo)

La Nucia's historic old town centre has narrow streets, traditional architecture and a medieval festival held annually featuring a jousting tournament, street performers and a fire show. The Purísima Xiqueta church from the 1700s is the historical centrepiece.

Gastronomy

La Nucia has around ten restaurants with good Spanish and international food. The selection is smaller than in Altea or Benidorm, but prices are lower and quality is often surprisingly high. Typical regional dishes include arròs a banda (fish rice), olleta alicantina (vegetable stew) and turrón (almond nougat from nearby Jijona).

Proximity to Benidorm and Altea

For larger shopping needs, nightlife and a wider restaurant selection, Benidorm is 12 minutes away. For a more sophisticated evening with galleries and tapas bars, Altea is the natural choice — 10 minutes by car.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of La Nucia?

Advantages

  • Affordable housing: 20–35 percent cheaper than coastal areas — you get more floor space and a larger plot for your money
  • World-class sports facilities: Ciudad Deportiva Camilo Cano with 66 facilities — subsidised fees for registered residents
  • Nature and outdoor life: Sierra Aitana, Puig Campana and Fonts del Algar within 20 minutes
  • International but integrated community: 63 nationalities, but 60 percent Spanish — not an expat bubble
  • Scandinavian infrastructure: Norwegian school, church and associations in the neighbouring municipality of Alfaz del Pi
  • International schools: Elian's British School and Altea International School
  • Good climate: Over 3,000 sunshine hours per year, mild winters
  • Sunday market: Over 400 stalls — one of the region's largest

Disadvantages

  • Car essential: Limited public transport — bus to Benidorm is available but a car is needed for daily life
  • Distance to the beach: 8–10 km to the nearest beach — not ideal for those who want sand between their toes every day
  • Limited restaurant selection: Fewer options than the coastal areas — Benidorm and Altea are the standard outing for a special dinner
  • Limited nightlife: La Nucia is quiet in the evenings — for nightlife you go to Benidorm
  • Spanish helps: To be fully integrated in local society, Spanish is more important here than in purely tourist resorts
  • Mountain roads: Some urbanisations have steep and narrow roads — not all vehicles cope well

How does La Nucia compare to neighbouring towns?

La Nucia vs Altea

Altea is the artist's coastal town — cobblestones, galleries, white facades and Mediterranean views. You pay €3,000–4,000 per square metre for that charm. La Nucia gives you more property for half the price, but you trade coastal charm for mountain views and sports facilities. Choose Altea for beach life and culture, La Nucia for space and an active lifestyle.

La Nucia vs Benidorm

Benidorm is big-city feeling on the coast — high-rises, 300 restaurants, a full-service hospital and flights that land almost at your doorstep. Price levels are 15–45 percent higher depending on the area. La Nucia suits those who want Benidorm's services 12 minutes away but want to sleep in silence with mountain views. Choose Benidorm for urban life and rental yields, La Nucia for peace and quality.

La Nucia vs Alfaz del Pi

Alfaz del Pi is La Nucia's nearest neighbour and shares much of its infrastructure. Alfaz is 5 minutes closer to the coast and has Spain's largest Norwegian colony. Prices in Alfaz are around 18 percent higher. Choose Alfaz if proximity to Albir beach and the Scandinavian network is the top priority, La Nucia if you prioritise sports facilities and more plot for your money.

La Nucia vs Polop

Polop is La Nucia's small neighbour — a picturesque mountain village feel with lower prices (€1,900–2,200 per square metre). The charm is genuine but services are limited. Choose Polop for maximum budget optimisation and mountain village atmosphere, La Nucia if you want the same price range but with sports facilities, schools and better services.
