Orihuela Costa – Complete Guide for Swedish Buyers 2026
Everything you need to know about Orihuela Costa on Costa Blanca: areas, property prices, climate, beach life and tips for buying property in southern Spain.

Property in Mil Palmeras: prices, beaches, services and what you should know before buying in this coastal resort on the southern Costa Blanca — for Swedish buyers.
Mil Palmeras is one of the Costa Blanca's most underrated coastal resorts and a first choice for Swedish buyers who want beachfront living without the tourist crowds. The resort, whose name means "a thousand palms", is located in the municipality of Pilar de la Horadada at the southernmost tip of the province of Alicante. With a Blue Flag-certified sandy beach lined with palm trees, an average price per square metre of around 3,700 euros in January 2026 and just about 60 km to Alicante airport, Mil Palmeras offers an unusual combination of beach luxury and reasonable prices. The market has risen by just over 9 percent in the past year, but still sits below many neighbouring resorts. This guide gives you everything you need to know to make a well-considered purchase decision.
Tips
Mil Palmeras belongs to the municipality of Pilar de la Horadada and lies on the border between the province of Alicante and Murcia. This means you have access to two airports: Alicante-Elche (60 km) and Murcia-Corvera (46 km).
Mil Palmeras is located at the very southernmost part of the Costa Blanca, in the comarca of Vega Baja del Segura. The resort borders Dehesa de Campoamor to the north and Torre de la Horadada to the south, with the Mediterranean directly to the east and the mouth of the Rio Secos river right nearby.
Geographically you are therefore at the southern tip of the province of Alicante, just a couple of kilometres from the border with the Region of Murcia. This gives a practical advantage: you can fly to either Alicante-Elche Airport (approximately 60 km to the north, 45–60 minutes by car) or Murcia-Corvera Airport (46 km to the south, approximately 35 minutes). From Stockholm and Gothenburg there are direct flights to both airports, particularly during peak season.
By car you reach Mil Palmeras via the motorway AP-7 or the national road N-332. Local buses run regularly to Pilar de la Horadada, Torre de la Horadada and onwards to Torrevieja. Having a car is an advantage if you want to explore the entire coast or visit the nearby golf courses.
The property market in Mil Palmeras has shown a clear upward trend. In January 2026 the average price per square metre was 3,711 euros, an increase of 9.18 percent compared to March 2025. That is a marked difference from October 2024 when the average was 3,130 euros per square metre.

Information
The rental market yields an average of 8.59 euros per square metre per month in October 2024. That means a two-room apartment of 70 square metres can yield a monthly rent of around 600 euros, making rental a possible income source during the months you are not living there yourself.
Several new construction projects have put Mil Palmeras on the map among investors. Lago Varese offers modern 2–3 room apartments and bungalows approximately 600 metres from the beach. Lago Di Como has beachside apartments with a shared pool and modern facilities. New construction generally holds a high standard with energy-efficient solutions, shared pools and underground garages.

The beach is without doubt Mil Palmeras' biggest draw. Playa de Mil Palmeras has received Blue Flag certification thanks to its fine sand quality and clear water. The beach is lined by the palm avenue that gave the resort its name and offers:
The beach slopes gently into the sea, making it particularly family-friendly. During peak season there are lifeguards on duty.
The neighbouring beach Las Higuericas, which belongs to Torre de la Horadada, also has Blue Flag status and is within walking distance to the south. In total, Pilar de la Horadada's coastline stretches over 5 kilometres with fine sand and high water quality.
Mil Palmeras has a distinct profile that makes the resort ideal for some buyers, but perhaps not for everyone.
Obs!
Mil Palmeras has a permanent population of only approximately 900 people. This means the resort is considerably quieter during the winter half of the year. If you plan year-round residency you should be comfortable with a more leisurely pace from October to April. The neighbouring Torre de la Horadada has more activity in winter.
Despite its size, Mil Palmeras has good basic services:

The area has over 300 sunny days per year and an annual average temperature of around 18 degrees. Rainfall is concentrated in autumn, particularly September–November, but the total number of rain days per year is low, usually under 30.
The summer breezes from the sea mean it rarely feels oppressively hot despite the high temperatures. Winters are mild compared to northern Europe, with daytime temperatures rarely dropping below 15 degrees.
The southern Costa Blanca is one of Europe's densest golf areas and from Mil Palmeras you reach several well-known courses within a short drive:
There are also additional courses in the Mar Menor area on the Murcia side, all within a half-hour radius.
Mil Palmeras has an active international community with residents from, among others, Sweden, Norway, the United Kingdom, Belgium and the Netherlands. The broader municipality of Pilar de la Horadada is estimated to have around 2,500 Swedish residents in the surrounding area, including Torre de la Horadada and Pilar centre, making it one of the larger Swedish colonies on the southern Costa Blanca.
Social life revolves around the seafront promenade, the restaurants and the shared pool areas in the residential complexes. During the summer months local festivals and events are held. In winter, the permanent population gathers at restaurants like Olympia and the social networks that have grown among Scandinavian expats.
Torre de la Horadada offers complementary urban life with its marina, its historic watchtower and the lively Pueblo Latino square — all within walking distance from Mil Palmeras.
It can be useful to compare Mil Palmeras with the nearest alternatives:
Mil Palmeras and nearest neighbours
Calm beach resort with palm avenue and Blue Flag.
Harbour town with more Spanish everyday life and more active winters.
The municipality's hub with full services and shops.
Resort character with higher price level.
Pilar de la Horadada serves as the service centre for the entire area and has the broadest supply of shops, schools and healthcare. Torrevieja, the larger city 20 minutes to the north, offers full-scale urban services with a hospital, shopping centres and Spain's second-largest Friday market.
If you are considering buying in Mil Palmeras there are a few things to keep in mind:
Distance to the beach is everything. It is beach proximity that drives prices. A property 200 metres from the sea can cost 30–50 percent more than a comparable property 800 metres away. Decide how important beach proximity is before setting your budget.
The Viking area is popular among Scandinavians. This part of Mil Palmeras has a high concentration of Nordic owners, which can be an advantage if you seek community but a disadvantage if you want a more Spanish feel.
New construction holds high standards. Projects such as Lago Varese and Lago Di Como offer modern energy-efficient homes with shared pools. If you are looking for turn-key without renovation needs, new builds are a safe choice.
Check the community fees. Shared pools, gardens and lifts provide convenience but mean monthly charges. Expect 50–150 euros per month depending on the complex.
Rental potential exists but is seasonal. Summer rental gives good income (June–September), but the rest of the year demand is lower. Do not count on year-round rental unless you offer a competitive winter price.
Tips
A NIE number (Spanish identity number for foreigners) is required before you can complete a purchase. Apply well in advance — it normally takes 2–4 weeks. Also expect 10–14 percent in purchase costs on top of the price, including tax, notary, land registry and legal fees.
Several factors point to continued positive development:
At the same time, be aware that the Spanish property market has cyclical patterns and that historical returns do not guarantee future results. Buy primarily a property you want to use — treat any capital appreciation as a bonus.
