Everything about Playa del Cura in Torrevieja: beach life, property prices, restaurants, promenade and tips for buying property at Torrevieja's central beach.

16 min readSpanienfastigheter

Playa del Cura is Torrevieja's most central and most visited beach — a 375-metre strip of fine golden sand situated in the middle of the city centre, surrounded by restaurants, cafés and shops. For those considering buying property in Torrevieja, this area is something of the epicentre: you have the Mediterranean literally on the other side of the street, a wide range of amenities within walking distance and a promenade that is one of the liveliest on Costa Blanca. Property prices in the Playa del Cura area stand at approximately 2,280 euros per square metre at the start of 2026, with an annual price increase of around 16 per cent. That is cheaper than many comparable beachside locations on the coast, but prices are rising rapidly.

This guide is aimed at those considering buying an apartment near Playa del Cura. I cover what the beach is like, what properties cost, which restaurants and services are available, and what you practically need to know — including the downsides that many estate agent guides skip over.

Where is Playa del Cura?

Playa del Cura is located in the heart of Torrevieja, a city with just over 110,000 residents on Costa Blanca Sur in the province of Alicante. The beach stretches along Paseo de los Marineros, between Punta Margallo to the east and Paseo Juan Aparicio to the west. It is as central as it gets — Torrevieja's main streets, shops, harbour and bus station are all within a one-kilometre radius.

Distances from Playa del Cura:

  • Torrevieja city centre (Plaza de la Constitución): 300 metres, 2–3 minutes on foot
  • Torrevieja harbour and marina: 1 km, approximately 10 minutes on foot
  • Torrevieja bus station: 1 km
  • Alicante-Elche airport (ALC): 44 km, approximately 40–50 minutes by car via the AP-7
  • Murcia-San Javier airport (RMU): 36 km, approximately 30 minutes by car
  • La Mata beach: 5 km north
  • Playa de los Locos: 600 metres south along the coast
  • Alicante city: 50 km north

From Sweden there are direct flights to Alicante from Stockholm, Gothenburg and Malmö with SAS, Norwegian and Ryanair. During high season Eurowings and other charter operators also fly there. From the airport you can get to Torrevieja by bus (Costa Azul, approximately 1 hour, from 6 euros) or hire car in under 45 minutes.

Information

Torrevieja has no railway station. All public transport goes by bus. From Playa del Cura you can reach the bus station in a 10-minute walk, with connections to Alicante, Murcia and other coastal areas.

What is the beach like?

Playa del Cura is not Torrevieja's longest beach — that honour goes to La Mata with its 2.3 kilometres. But it is definitely the city's best-equipped and most visited. The beach has fine golden sand, shallow water with a gentle slope and a sheltered position that keeps the sea calm.

Beach facts:

  • Length: 375 metres
  • Width: Approximately 27 metres
  • Sand: Fine, light golden colour
  • Area: 10,596 square metres
  • Certifications: Blue Flag, Qualitur, ISO 9001, ISO 14001

Services and facilities:

  • Lifeguards during the summer season
  • Sun loungers and parasols for hire
  • Foot showers and toilets
  • Adapted bathing area for people with reduced mobility, including amphibious wheelchairs (July–August)
  • Water sports: stand-up paddle, water trampoline, kayak hire
  • Playground and exercise equipment along the promenade

This is a typical urban beach. Its strength is that everything is in place — restaurants, shops, taxi rank, car parks — but the downside is that it becomes crowded in midsummer. During July and August it is difficult to find a spot after 10 in the morning. Many people go down early to reserve places with towels and parasols, and the beach strip can feel overfull.

During the low season (October to May) the picture is completely different. The beach is almost empty and the promenade becomes a peaceful spot for evening walks and coffee with sea views.

Tips

Want to swim centrally but with a bit more space? Walk 10 minutes south to Playa de los Locos — a longer beach with fewer people but still close to the centre.

The property market in the Playa del Cura area has shown strong growth in recent years. Data from Idealista shows prices rising steadily month on month:

Prices are rising 16–19% per year in the area. If you are considering a purchase near Playa del Cura, do not wait too long — the area is one of the most sought-after micro-locations in all of Torrevieja according to market forecasts for 2026.

What restaurants and services are there?

This is one of Playa del Cura's major strengths. Thanks to the central location you have one of Costa Blanca's densest concentrations of restaurants, cafés and shops within walking distance.

Restaurants along the promenade and nearby:

  • Restaurant Sunset Beach — Belgian/seafood with over 1,200 Tripadvisor reviews. Known for its fish and seafood menu.
  • Belchica — Another popular Belgian restaurant with seven-course menus.
  • Sands Bistro — International cuisine, popular Sunday roast spot among British visitors.
  • Sirocco Restaurante — Mediterranean cuisine right by the beach, appreciated for value for money.
  • Pacu Restaurante Pizzería — Italian and Spanish combination, family-friendly.
  • Restaurante Muelle — Italian/Mediterranean cuisine near the harbour, over 2,000 reviews.
  • El Mesón de la Costa — For those who want to treat themselves to finer seafood.
  • Casa Luján — Spanish Mediterranean food, popular with locals.

Set menus (menú del día) are typically 10 to 15 euros for three courses with a drink. An evening dinner with wine and a starter costs around 25–40 euros per person at most restaurants along the promenade.

Services and shopping:

  • Supermarkets: Mercadona, Consum and Carrefour — all within walking distance
  • Pharmacies, banks, post office
  • Habaneras shopping centre (10 minutes on foot)
  • Fish market at the harbour
  • Torrevieja street and flea market (Fridays, one of Costa Blanca's largest)

Healthcare:

  • Hospital de Torrevieja, the public hospital, is approximately 3 kilometres from the beach
  • Several private clinics and dentists in the centre

What is the promenade like?

Paseo de los Marineros — the promenade along Playa del Cura — is one of the liveliest spots in all of Torrevieja. It is wide, lined with palm trees, and filled with outdoor restaurants, ice cream bars, souvenir shops and small boutiques.

The promenade starts at Torrevieja's harbour and marina in the south and extends northward past the beach and along Paseo Juan Aparicio. In total it is approximately 2 to 3 kilometres of connected coastal walking — perfect for morning jogging, evening walks or a peaceful coffee with views of the Mediterranean.

In summer the promenade is full of life from early morning to late at night. Street vendors, ice cream bars, watermelon stalls and wandering masseurs make it something of a southern European institution. In winter the pace is calm but the restaurants largely stay open — Torrevieja's large retired population (both Spanish and international) keeps the economy going year-round.

Highlights along the promenade:

  • Views of the harbour and the floating museums (submarine Delfín S-61 and Albatros III)
  • Hombre del Mar monument
  • Playgrounds and outdoor exercise equipment
  • Direct connection to Torrevieja's historic city centre

Is there nightlife near Playa del Cura?

Torrevieja is not Ibiza — and that is part of its appeal. The nightlife around Playa del Cura is relaxed and aimed primarily at couples, families and an older audience.

In summer many bars and restaurants along the promenade stay open until midnight or later. Concerts and events are organised directly on the beach — the best known is "Habaneras en la playa", an extension of the international Habaneras festival held at the end of July.

San Juan (23 June) is the year's major event: thousands of people gather on the beach with bonfires, music and midnight bathing to welcome summer. It is an experience worth planning a visit around.

In Torrevieja's centre, 5 minutes from the beach, there are a handful of bars and nightclubs for those who want a later night. However, the selection is limited compared to Alicante city or Benidorm. Most evenings revolve around sitting outside on a terrace with a copa de vino, eating tapas late and walking home along the sea.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of living near Playa del Cura?

Arguments in favour of the area:

  • Extremely central — everything within walking distance: beach, restaurants, shops, hospital, bus station
  • Lively year-round — unlike many coastal areas that stand empty in winter, central Torrevieja has a large permanent population
  • International city — 52% of Torrevieja's 110,500 residents are from abroad, from 123 countries. You will find Scandinavian associations, international shops and many people speak English
  • Swedish community — 1,840 registered Swedes in Torrevieja (January 2025), plus over 700 Norwegians and 638 Finns
  • Close to the airport — several direct flights from Sweden to Alicante, travel time to the beach under one hour
  • Affordable — still possible to buy a beachside apartment under 200,000 euros
  • Climate — approximately 3,000 sunshine hours per year, average temperature 19.3 degrees, very low rainfall (280 mm/year)

Arguments against:

  • Crowded in summer — the beach is only 375 metres long and 27 metres wide. During July and August it is overcrowded and the lack of space is real
  • Building stock — most properties are from the 1970s–1980s. Insulation, lift standards and plumbing can be outdated. Budget for renovation costs when buying an older apartment
  • Noise — a central location means urban noise, restaurant sounds and summer events. Not for those seeking total peace
  • Parking — a nightmare in summer. Underground car parks exist but fill up quickly. Properties near the beach rarely have their own parking
  • Water clarity — some visitors note that the water at Playa del Cura can be cloudier than at more open beaches such as La Mata or La Zenia, due to the sheltered bay shape
  • Summer crowds — Torrevieja swells to over 350,000 people in summer. This means queues, crowds and higher prices for everything from parking to restaurants

Who is Playa del Cura best suited to?

Best for:

  • Couples and retirees who want beach and city life within walking distance
  • Investors looking for a rental-friendly location with high tourist demand
  • Swedish winter sun seekers who want a vibrant, central coastal position
  • First-time buyers in Spain who want to test city life before potentially moving to quieter areas

Less suitable for:

  • Families with children who need larger properties — apartments are often small (50–75 sqm)
  • Those seeking peace and nature — La Mata, Guardamar or Orihuela Costa are better alternatives
  • Car owners without their own parking — the parking situation is problematic

Practical tips for those considering a purchase

  1. Visit in both high and low season — the area is two completely different places in July vs January
  2. Check the building age — ask about insulation, plumbing and whether the lift has been modernised
  3. Factor in renovation costs — a full apartment renovation costs 25,000–45,000 euros for 60–70 sqm
  4. Thinking about rental income? — the area is popular for short-term rentals, but check the municipality's rules for a tourist licence (licencia turística)
  5. Use a local lawyer — the buying process in Spain requires a NIE number, notary and registration. Always appoint an independent lawyer
